Giant thorny bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea, syn. Bambusa bambos), known as kanta bans or behor bans, is a very large, dense, clump-forming bamboo rather than a broadleaf tree, with tall, arching green culms reaching 20-30 m and curved spines at the lower nodes. It forms massive, almost impenetrable thickets and flowers only gregariously at long intervals before dying. Native to the moist deciduous forests of peninsular India, it is common along riverbanks and valleys in the Western Ghats, central and southern India.

It is one of India's most important commercial bamboos, the strong culms used for construction, scaffolding, ladders, agricultural implements, basketry and as the chief raw material for the paper-pulp industry. The thorny clumps make excellent live boundary fences and erosion control on riverbanks, the tender shoots are edible, and various parts are used in traditional medicine.

  • Family: Poaceae
  • Native region: Peninsular India
  • Mature height: 20-30 m
  • Growth rate: Very fast

Sowing the seed: bamboo seed ("bamboo rice") is short-lived and must be sown fresh, so soak the seeds in water for about 24 hours before sowing. Sow them shallowly, about 1 cm deep, in moist, well-drained nursery beds or polybags kept warm and lightly shaded; germination is fairly quick, usually within 14-21 days. Grow the seedlings on for several months and transplant the established clumplets to the field at the start of the monsoon.
