Neem (Azadirachta indica), known as nim or margosa, is a fast-growing evergreen tree of 15-20 m with a dense, rounded crown of glossy, toothed pinnate leaves that stay green even through the dry season. It bears sprays of small, honey-scented white flowers followed by olive-like yellow drupes. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is one of the most widely planted trees across the country, thriving in the hot, dry plains and tolerating poor, saline and degraded soils.

Neem is celebrated as the "village pharmacy": every part is used in Ayurvedic and household medicine, and neem oil and leaf extracts are powerful natural pesticides, antiseptics and skin and dental remedies. It is a leading avenue, shade and afforestation tree, valued for cooling shade, soil improvement and its insect-repellent properties, and its hard, durable timber resists termites.

  • Family: Meliaceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent
  • Mature height: 15-20 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

Sowing the seed: neem seed is recalcitrant and must be sown fresh, as viability falls sharply within a few weeks of ripening. Remove the pulp and soak the cleaned seeds in water for about 24 hours, then sow them 1-2 cm deep in well-drained sandy-loam beds or polybags kept moist and warm. Germination is quick, usually within 7-14 days; transplant the seedlings to the field at the onset of the rains when they are 20-30 cm tall.
