Uses

The dried roots are powdered as a classic Ayurvedic adaptogen for stress, sleep and vitality. Leaves are used in traditional preparations, and the shrub doubles as a hardy ornamental in xeriscape gardens.

Growing tips

Sow seeds shallow, about 1 cm deep, in seed trays or directly in pots; barely cover and keep just moist. Germination takes 10-15 days in warm conditions. Transplant seedlings to 30-45 cm spacing once they have a few true leaves. The plant tolerates neglect once established. Roots are ready to harvest in 150-180 days, when lower leaves dry and berries turn red-orange.
