Uses

The dried roots are powdered as a classic Ayurvedic adaptogen for stress, sleep and vitality. Leaves are used in traditional preparations, and the shrub doubles as a hardy ornamental in xeriscape gardens.

Growing tips

Sow seeds shallow, about 1 cm deep, in seed trays or directly in pots; barely cover and keep just moist. Germination takes 10-15 days in warm conditions. Transplant seedlings to 30-45 cm spacing once they have a few true leaves. The plant tolerates neglect once established. Roots are ready to harvest in 150-180 days, when lower leaves dry and berries turn red-orange.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sow ashwagandha seeds in India?
Sow ashwagandha at the start of the monsoon (June to August) or in early spring. The warm, moderately moist soil of the rainy season gives the best germination, after which the plant tolerates dry conditions.
How long until ashwagandha roots are ready to harvest?
Roots mature in about 150 to 180 days from sowing. Harvest when the lower leaves dry out and the berries turn reddish-orange, then wash, dry and powder the roots.
