Uses

Mainly grown for fresh salads, where its peppery leaves add bite to mixed greens. Also tossed into sandwiches, scattered over pizza, blended into pesto, or wilted into pasta and soups.

Growing tips

Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep, spacing rows 15 cm apart and thinning plants to 10-15 cm. Germination is rapid at 5-10 days. Direct sow in pots or beds, no transplanting needed. Harvest baby leaves in 20-25 days and full leaves in 35-40 days; pick outer leaves regularly for a cut-and-come-again crop. Sow in succession every 2-3 weeks and harvest before the heat to avoid bitterness and bolting.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow arugula seeds in India?
Arugula is a cool-season crop, so the best sowing window in most of India is October to February. In hill stations it can be grown almost year-round; avoid the peak summer heat as plants bolt and turn bitter quickly.
Can I grow arugula in pots on a balcony?
Yes, arugula has shallow roots and grows beautifully in containers. A pot or trough 15-20 cm deep with loose, fertile soil and 4-6 hours of light is enough for a steady supply of leaves.
