Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), also called golden cane or butterfly palm, is a clustering, multi-stemmed feather palm growing 3-8 m, forming dense clumps of slender, yellow-green cane-like stems topped with arching, finely divided fronds. It bears small yellow flowers and tiny yellow-to-purple fruits. Native to Madagascar, it is one of the most widely grown ornamental palms across India, thriving in gardens in the warm plains and coastal regions and as a popular indoor and patio plant everywhere.

It is grown almost entirely as an ornamental, valued for its lush, tropical, clumping habit that suits screens, borders, large pots and interiors. It is one of the best-known air-purifying houseplants, tolerant of low light and humidity, and is used extensively in landscaping for soft green texture around buildings and pools.

  • Family: Arecaceae
  • Native region: Madagascar
  • Mature height: 3-8 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate

Sowing the seed: use fresh seed and remove the fleshy fruit pulp, then soak the cleaned seeds in warm water for 2-3 days to soften the coat and speed germination. Sow them about 1 cm deep, barely covered, in a moist, well-drained nursery mix kept warm (around 25-30 C) and humid. Germination is slow and uneven, usually taking 30 or more days; pot on the seedlings into clumps once they have a few leaves.
