Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum), the flamingo flower, is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its glossy, heart-shaped waxy spathes in red, pink, white, orange or purple, each centred by a colourful spadix. Flowering almost year-round in good conditions, the long-lasting 'blooms' sit above deep-green leathery leaves, making it a top indoor and cut-flower plant. It thrives in bright indirect light, warmth, high humidity and a loose, airy, well-drained mix. Low-fuss but moisture-sensitive, it rewards steady care with continuous colour. All parts contain irritant calcium oxalate and are toxic if chewed, so keep it away from pets and children.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Anthurium?
Water when the top inch of mix dries, keeping it lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering causes root rot and yellow leaves.
How much light does it need?
It thrives in bright indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun, which scorches leaves, and deep shade, which stops flowering.
Is Anthurium safe for pets?
No. All parts contain irritant calcium oxalate and are toxic if chewed, so keep it away from cats, dogs and children.
How do I repot it?
Repot every two years in spring into a loose, airy, well-drained mix, only slightly larger, as it likes a snug pot.
How do I propagate it?
Propagate by dividing the plant at repotting or by separating offsets that form at the base, each with roots.
Why are the leaves yellowing?
Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering or poor drainage. Let the top inch dry, use an airy mix and ensure the pot drains freely.
Why is it not flowering?
Too little light, dry air or over-feeding with nitrogen reduce blooms. Give bright indirect light, humidity and a balanced feed.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, it is one of the best flowering houseplants, ideal for bright indoor corners with warmth and humidity.
Is it really toxic?
Yes, the calcium oxalate in all parts irritates the mouth and is toxic if eaten, so handle and site it carefully.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed monthly with a dilute balanced fertilizer in the growing season; a bloom feed can encourage more spathes.
