Aloe vera is an evergreen succulent forming rosettes of thick, fleshy, grey-green leaves edged with soft teeth and filled with a clear, soothing gel. Known across India as Ghritkumari, it is one of the most popular and easy-to-grow medicinal plants for homes, terraces and gardens.
Extremely drought-tolerant, it thrives in the bright sun and warm temperatures found in most of India, asking for little more than well-drained soil and infrequent watering. Mature plants produce tall spikes of tubular yellow to orange flowers, usually in the cooler, drier months.
Beyond its ornamental value, the leaf gel is widely used in Ayurveda and home remedies for skin and hair care, making it a practical addition to any Indian household.

Care guide
| Sunlight | Bright light; full sun to partial shade. Indoors, place near a sunny window. Protect from harsh, prolonged afternoon sun in peak summer. |
|---|---|
| Watering | Low. Water deeply only when the soil is fully dry, roughly once a week in summer and every 2-3 weeks in winter. Avoid waterlogging. |
| Soil / mix | Free-draining sandy or cactus/succulent mix; add sand and perlite. Avoid heavy clay that holds water. |
| Temperature | Thrives at 18-35 C. Tolerates heat well; protect from frost and temperatures below 5 C. |
| Humidity | Prefers low to moderate humidity; does not need misting and dislikes damp, stagnant air. |
| Fertilizer | Light feeder. A diluted, balanced or low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in monsoon is enough. |
| Pruning | Minimal. Remove dried, damaged or diseased outer leaves at the base; cut spent flower spikes. |
| Repotting | Every 2-3 years or when crowded with offsets. Use a slightly larger pot with drainage holes and fresh free-draining mix. |
| Propagation | Easily propagated by separating and replanting the offsets (pups) that form around the base. |
| Pests & problems | Generally hardy; watch for mealybugs, scale and aphids. Root rot from overwatering is the main problem. |
| Toxicity / safety | Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested (latex contains saponins/anthraquinones); keep away from pets. The leaf latex can also irritate; keep out of reach of small children. |
| Difficulty | Easy |

Frequently asked questions
How often should I water my Aloe vera in India?
Water only when the soil is completely dry, about once a week in summer and every 2-3 weeks in winter. Overwatering and waterlogging are the most common causes of root rot.
Can Aloe vera grow indoors?
Yes. Place it near a bright, sunny window. It tolerates indoor conditions well but needs good light and a free-draining pot with drainage holes to stay healthy.
Is Aloe vera safe for pets?
No. The leaf latex is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten and can cause vomiting and lethargy, so keep the plant out of reach of pets and small children.
