Albizia procera (Albizia procera), known as safed siris or white siris, is a fast-growing deciduous legume tree reaching 15-30 m with a smooth, pale greenish-white bark that makes it easy to recognise. It carries feathery bipinnate foliage and flat-topped clusters of pale yellow-cream flowers in the monsoon, followed by thin reddish-brown pods. The species is native across India, growing in moist and dry deciduous forests, riverbanks and the sub-Himalayan plains up to about 1,500 m.

It is widely used in agroforestry and as a shade tree because its roots fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve soil fertility. The moderately hard timber serves for construction, furniture, agricultural tools and packing cases, the leaves are lopped for fodder, and the bark yields tannins and is used in traditional medicine and as a fish poison. It is also planted to reclaim degraded and eroded land.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Mimosoideae)
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent and tropical Asia
  • Mature height: 15-30 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

Sowing the seed: soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours to soften the seed coat and trigger germination. Sow about 1-2 cm deep in well-drained sandy-loam nursery beds or polybags; germination is rapid, typically within 7-14 days. Transplant the seedlings to the field at the onset of the monsoon once they reach 25-40 cm in height.
