Uses

Primarily a medicinal herb. The dried roots are used in Ayurvedic and Unani preparations as a nerve and salivary tonic, and traditionally chewed or powdered for toothache, gum care and oral health.

Growing tips

Sow seeds shallow, about 0.5 cm deep, in seed trays or directly in light soil. Keep warm and lightly moist; germination takes 14-21 days and can be uneven. Transplant seedlings 20-25 cm apart once sturdy. Give it full sun and sharp drainage; roots are usually mature for harvest after about 5-6 months, lifted when the plant begins to dry back.
