Uses

Grown purely as an ornamental for bedding, edging, borders and container displays. The long-lasting clusters also work as small cut flowers and draw butterflies and bees to the garden.

Growing tips

Surface-sow the tiny seeds and press lightly without covering, as they need light to germinate. Keep at 20-25°C; germination takes 7-14 days. Transplant when seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, spacing dwarf types 15-20 cm apart. Pinch tips early to encourage bushiness, and deadhead spent blooms. Plants flower in roughly 60-70 days from sowing and continue for months.
