Acanthocereus tetragonus is a clumping columnar cactus native to the Americas, widely traded in India in its compact cristate or branching ornamental form known as the Fairy Castle Cactus. It produces upright, angular green stems lined with small white spines along the ribs, branching as it matures to resemble the turrets of a tiny castle.
It is an exceptionally easy, drought-tolerant plant that thrives on neglect, making it a favourite for beginners, busy households and office desks. Grown in bright light with minimal water, it stays attractive year-round and needs little attention beyond an occasional watering.
While mature plants can rarely produce large nocturnal white flowers, indoor specimens are valued mainly for their sculptural green form rather than blooms.

Growing tips

Place in the brightest spot available, such as a south or west-facing window or a balcony with morning sun.

During the hot, dry months water lightly only when the mix is bone dry; during the monsoon, cut back watering sharply and ensure the pot drains freely to prevent rot. In winter keep it nearly dry and away from cold drafts. Rotate the pot occasionally so it grows evenly toward the light.
