Acacia planifrons, the umbrella babul or kudai velam, is a small thorny tree celebrated for its distinctive flat-topped, umbrella-shaped crown. It is native to the dry plains of southern India and Sri Lanka and is a familiar feature of the arid scrub of Tamil Nadu and the Deccan.

The tree is grown chiefly for fuelwood and charcoal and provides browse and pods as fodder for goats and sheep; its wood is also used for small implements and rural construction. As a drought-hardy nitrogen-fixing legume it is valued for greening parched wastelands, and its striking umbrella form makes it an attractive specimen in xeriscape and arid landscaping.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
  • Native region: dry zones of southern India and Sri Lanka
  • Mature height: 5-9 m
  • Growth rate: slow to moderate, very drought hardy

The hard-coated seeds need pre-treatment: pour hot water over them and soak as it cools for 12-24 hours, or nick the coat. Sow 1-2 cm deep in a sandy, free-draining mix; germination usually takes 7-14 days. Raise the seedlings in poly bags and transplant at the onset of the monsoon.
