Cereus repandus, often called the Peruvian Apple Cactus, is a tall, fast-growing columnar cactus with handsome ribbed blue-green stems that branch with age into a striking architectural plant. Large white, fragrant flowers open at night in summer and are followed by edible reddish fruits with sweet white flesh. Robust and drought-hardy, it suits large pots, courtyards and landscape accents, tolerating heat and neglect once established. Indoors it makes a bold sculptural specimen for very bright spots. Easy to grow from stem cuttings, it is a rewarding statement cactus for Indian gardens and terraces.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water a Cereus?
Water deeply but infrequently using soak-and-dry, roughly every 1-2 weeks in summer and rarely in winter, allowing the soil to dry fully between.
How much sun does it need?
It thrives in full sun with six or more hours of direct light daily, which keeps the columns sturdy and blue-green.
Is Cereus safe for pets?
The plant is non-toxic to pets, but its sharp spines can cause injury, so site it where animals will not brush against it.
Is the fruit edible?
Yes, the reddish fruit has sweet white pulp and is edible, which is why it is called the Peruvian Apple Cactus.
How do I propagate it?
Cut a healthy stem section, let the cut callus for a week or more, then plant in dry sandy cactus mix and water lightly once rooted.
When does it flower?
Mature plants produce large white fragrant flowers that open at night during summer, often followed by fruit.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, in a very bright sunny spot, but it grows tall and fast, so it is better suited to large pots, balconies or gardens.
Why is my Cereus turning yellow or soft?
Yellowing or soft patches usually indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering and ensure the soil is gritty and well-drained.
How big does it get?
In the ground it can reach several metres, but in containers it is easily kept to 1-2 m and can be trimmed to control height.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed a balanced diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the summer growing season and stop in the cooler months.
