Total:

Araucaria columnaris, known in India as the Christmas Tree or Cook Pine, is a striking evergreen conifer with a tall, narrow, distinctly tiered silhouette and whorls of upward-curving branches clothed in soft, scale-like green foliage. Young plants make elegant, symmetrical specimens grown in pots indoors and on balconies, while mature trees become towering landscape features and are often planted as living Christmas trees. Native to New Caledonia, it adapts well to warm, frost-free Indian conditions. It prefers bright light, well-drained soil and protection from harsh dry winds, rewarding growers with a formal, architectural form year-round.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water the Christmas Tree plant?
Keep the soil lightly moist, watering when the top layer dries, about 2-3 times a week. Avoid waterlogging, which rots the roots.
How much sunlight does it need?
It prefers bright light to full sun. Indoors, place it near a bright window; outdoors it enjoys full to partial sun.
Is the Christmas Tree plant safe for pets?
Araucaria is generally regarded as non-toxic, but it is wise to keep pets from chewing the foliage.
Can it be grown in a pot?
Yes, young plants are popular potted specimens for indoors and balconies. Repot every 2-3 years and it stays compact for years.
How is it propagated?
It is propagated mainly from seeds and sometimes from tip cuttings, though seed-grown plants keep the best symmetrical form.
What common problems affect it?
Mealybugs and scale can appear, and low light or dry air cause drooping or browning. Provide good light and steady moisture.
Does the Christmas Tree plant flower?
As a conifer it does not flower; it is grown entirely for its handsome tiered evergreen foliage and symmetrical shape.
Is it an indoor or outdoor plant?
Young plants do well indoors in bright light; as they grow large they are best moved outdoors into the garden.
Is any part of the plant poisonous?
It is considered non-toxic, but as an ornamental it should not be eaten.
What fertilizer is best?
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season, roughly once a month, to keep foliage green and healthy.
