Fertilizer Light feeding; avoid excess nitrogen which reduces flowering
Difficulty Easy

Uses

Grown as a tall flowering backdrop in beds and along fences, as a butterfly and bee attractant in pollinator gardens, and as a long-lasting cut flower. The leafy biomass is also used as a nutrient-rich green manure and mulch.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds 1 cm deep, spacing plants 40-60 cm apart, after the last cool spell or with the onset of the monsoon. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days at warm temperatures. Thin seedlings to give each plant room; pinch young tips to encourage bushy, multi-stemmed growth. Provide full sun and stake tall plants in windy spots. Flowering begins about 70-90 days from sowing and continues for months. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow Tithonia seeds in India?
Sow from spring through the onset of the monsoon (roughly February to July) when temperatures are warm. Tithonia loves heat and flowers right through the rains into autumn.
Can Tithonia be grown in pots?
It can be started in large containers, but because plants grow 1.2-1.8 m tall they perform far better in open beds. Use a deep, wide pot and stake the plant if you grow it on a balcony.
