Uses

Young, tender gourds are cooked into light sabzis, dals and stir-fries. Fully mature, dried fruits are peeled and de-seeded to make natural loofah sponges for bathing and gentle dish-scrubbing, making this a dual-purpose home crop.

Growing tips

Soak seeds overnight, then sow 2-3 cm deep at the base of a sturdy trellis or pandal, spacing hills 60-90 cm apart. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil (25-35°C). Train vines up the support and pinch the tip to boost side shoots and female flowers. Pick gourds young (15-25 cm) for eating, starting around 60-70 days; leave a few to ripen fully on the vine and dry for loofahs.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow sponge gourd seeds in India?
Sow from February to July for the summer and monsoon season. The vine needs warm soil of 25-35°C, so avoid cold winter sowings in the North Indian plains.
Can sponge gourd be grown in a container?
Yes. Use a large pot of 18-20 inches with rich, well-drained mix and a tall trellis. Keep one vine per pot well-watered and fed for a good home harvest.
