The Fiji Fan Palm (Pritchardia grandis) is a striking ornamental palm grown for its very large, stiff, pleated, fan-shaped leaves held on a clean, slender trunk. The bold, almost circular fronds give it a dramatic tropical presence, making it a sought-after specimen and accent palm for lawns, courtyards, resorts and large containers. It is grown purely for its handsome foliage rather than for any economic product.
A palm of warm, humid, frost-free climates, it does best in India's coastal and tropical regions in full sun to part shade on rich, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. It appreciates shelter from strong winds that can tatter its broad leaves.
- Family: Arecaceae (palm family)
- Native region: South Pacific islands (Fiji / Tonga region)
- Mature height: 8-10 m
- Growth rate: Slow
Soak the fresh, cleaned seeds in warm water for 2-3 days, refreshing it daily, as fresh seed germinates far better than old. Sow about 2 cm deep in a moist, well-drained sandy mix kept warm (28-35 C) and humid; germination is slow and uneven, often taking one to three months. Pot the seedlings on and grow in light shade before transplanting.
