Uses

Grown purely as an ornamental ground cover and edging, it fills hanging baskets, window boxes, rockeries and the dry sunny spots where little else flowers. Ideal low-maintenance colour for terrace gardens and apartment balconies.

Growing tips

Surface sow the tiny seeds and press them lightly into the mix without covering, as they need light to germinate; keep at 21-26°C. Germination takes 7-14 days. Mist gently to avoid washing seeds away. Thin or transplant seedlings to 15-20 cm spacing once they have a few true leaves. Plants begin flowering about 50-60 days after sowing and continue all summer; pinch tips to encourage branching.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow portulaca seeds in India?
Sow from February to June for a long summer display, since the plant loves heat and full sun. In warmer plains it can also be sown after the monsoon for autumn colour.
Can portulaca be grown in pots and hanging baskets?
Yes, it is excellent in containers. Use a shallow, free-draining pot or hanging basket in full sun and water lightly; the trailing succulent stems spill over the edges beautifully.
