Mallotus Philippensis, Kumkum Tree Red - 0.5 kg Seeds

The Kamala or Kumkum Tree (Mallotus philippensis) is a small-to-medium evergreen tree whose round fruit capsules are coated in a brilliant brick-red glandular powder. This red powder, called kamala, is its most prized product.

Kamala powder is used as a natural dye for silk and other fabrics, as a colourant in traditional sindoor/kumkum, and in medicine as an anthelmintic (to expel worms); the tree also yields minor timber and has several traditional medicinal uses from its bark and leaves. It is widespread across India in sub-Himalayan tracts and dry-to-moist deciduous forests, growing on hill slopes and forest margins.

Collect the ripe capsules and rub off the red powder to free the small dark seeds. Soak the seed in water for about 24 hours, sow shallowly in a moist, well-drained seed tray and keep warm; germination takes roughly 21-30 days and can be uneven. Prick out the seedlings into bags once they are sturdy enough to handle.
