Tender young pods are cooked in Indian sabzis, stir-fries, soups and salads, and are a staple of mixed-vegetable dishes. As a legume, the plant also fixes nitrogen, improving soil for the next crop.

Growing tips

Sow seeds direct about 2-3 cm deep, spacing bush types 10-15 cm apart and pole types 20 cm apart near a support. Beans dislike transplanting, so sow where they will grow. Germination takes 7-14 days. Provide a trellis for pole varieties. Harvest tender pods from about 45-55 days, picking regularly to keep plants producing.

When is the best time to sow French beans in India?

Sow in the cool season from October to February in most of India, and again in spring in the hills. Avoid the peak monsoon and extreme heat, as beans drop their flowers above 30-35 C.

Can I grow French beans in a container?

Yes. Bush varieties grow well in a pot or grow bag at least 25-30 cm deep with 5-6 hours of sun. Pole types also work in big pots if you add a trellis for them to climb.
