White clover (Trifolium repens), of which Durana is an improved variety, is a low, creeping perennial legume that spreads by rooting stolons to form a dense mat of trifoliate leaves topped by rounded white flower heads. It is persistent, hard-wearing and self-renewing.

It is grown as a living groundcover and lawn companion, as a high-protein pasture and fodder legume, and as a nitrogen-fixing cover crop that enriches the soil and suppresses weeds. Its flowers are also valued by bees. White clover prefers cooler, moister conditions, so in India it is best suited to the hills, temperate zones and the cooler winter season of the northern plains.

  • Family: Fabaceae
  • Native region: Europe and Western Asia
  • Mature height: 0.1–0.3 m (creeping)
  • Growth rate: Fast

The tiny seeds need no pre-treatment. Surface-sow or barely cover them on a firm, finely prepared, moist seedbed and keep it consistently damp. Germination is quick, typically 7–14 days in cool, moist conditions; once seedlings establish, the stolons knit together into a dense, self-maintaining cover.
