Uses

<p>The mature flesh is used to make Agra&#039;s famous petha sweet, while tender fruits go into kootu, sambar, raita and curries. Widely used in Ayurveda as a cooling tonic, and its juice is a popular health drink.</p>

Growing tips

<p>Soak seeds overnight, then sow <strong>2-3 cm deep</strong> in hills or pits spaced 1-1.5 m apart, with 2-3 seeds per hill thinned to the strongest. Germination takes <strong>6-10 days</strong> in warm soil. Direct sow as the vine resents transplanting. Provide a strong trellis or let it trail on the ground. First harvest of tender fruit comes in <strong>60-70 days</strong>; leave fruit on the vine 100-120 days for fully waxed, storable mature gourds.</p>

What is the best time to sow ash gourd seeds in India?
Sow ash gourd at the onset of summer (January to March) and again with the monsoon (June to July) in most of India. It is a warm-season crop and needs warm soil above 20 C to germinate well.
Does ash gourd need a trellis or can it grow on the ground?
It can do either. A trellis keeps the heavy fruit clean and saves space on a terrace, while ground-trailing gives the largest fruit. Either way give it plenty of room to spread, at least 1 metre per plant.
